Treatment decisions begin with the exact diagnosis and a person's goals and health. This overview describes categories to discuss with a specialist. It is not a treatment sequence or a recommendation for any individual.
Pancreatic NET treatment options
Depending on the pancreatic NET and its extent, options can include:
- Surgery or selected treatments directed at tumors in the liver.
- Somatostatin analogues, which may help with hormone-related symptoms and tumor control.
- Targeted medicines and chemotherapy.
- Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT), which uses a radioactive medicine directed at tumor receptors in eligible patients.
- Structured surveillance for selected tumors.
The appropriate choices depend on factors such as grade, spread, hormone activity, and previous treatment. A list of options does not mean every option is appropriate for every NET or for a poorly differentiated NEC. NCI: Treating pancreatic NETs
New approvals have specific limits
On March 26, 2025, the U.S. FDA approved cabozantinib for certain previously treated, well-differentiated pancreatic and extra-pancreatic NETs in adults and patients aged 12 or older. The approval covers unresectable, locally advanced or metastatic disease. It is not an approval for every neuroendocrine cancer or a guarantee of benefit. Your clinician must assess the indication, risks, and alternatives. FDA: Cabozantinib approval for pNET and epNET
Supportive care belongs in the plan
Palliative care addresses symptoms, treatment effects, and practical or emotional needs. It can begin at any stage and accompany treatment aimed at controlling or curing cancer. It is not limited to the end of life. NCI: Palliative care in cancer
What a clinical trial can and cannot offer
Clinical trials test medical approaches in people, including new treatments, new uses of existing treatments, and ways to improve quality of life. The approach being tested is investigational for the trial's question. Research participation is not proof that it works. NCI: What are clinical trials?
A trial may or may not help you, and its treatment may be less effective or more harmful than standard care. Ask the study team about eligibility, alternatives, practical demands, and your right to leave. NCI: Clinical trial risks, benefits, and questions
Find studies through the NCI clinical trial search or ClinicalTrials.gov. Confirm recruitment status directly with the study team; a listing is not a promise of access or benefit.
