Questions for your neuroendocrine specialist

Prepare for a neuroendocrine specialist visit with questions about your diagnosis, treatment goals, symptoms, and clinical trials.

You do not need to ask every question at one appointment. Choose the ones that matter most to you, bring a written list, and leave space for answers. If something is unclear, ask the clinician to explain it in everyday language. The questions below are a starting point, not a checklist of tests or treatments everyone needs. Understand the diagnosis

  • What is the full name of my diagnosis, and where did it begin?
  • Is it a well-differentiated NET or a poorly differentiated NEC?
  • What are the grade, Ki-67 result, and mitotic rate? Which tissue sample was tested?
  • What is the stage, and where has the cancer been found?
  • Is the tumor causing a hormone-related syndrome?
  • Would another pathology review or genetic counseling help answer an unresolved question?

Your team can explain which questions apply to your tumor type and what is still uncertain. NCI: Questions about your diagnosis · NCI: Pancreatic NET diagnosis and staging

Compare the plan and alternatives

  • What is the main goal now: removing the cancer, controlling its growth, relieving symptoms, or a combination?
  • What options fit my situation, and why do you favor this one?
  • How soon does a decision need to be made?
  • What benefits are realistic, and what important risks or long-term effects should I understand?
  • How will you check whether the plan is working, and what would lead you to change it?
  • Would a second opinion from a team experienced with this tumor type be useful?

Plan for day-to-day care

  • Which symptoms or side effects need urgent attention, and who should I contact after hours?
  • Who can help with eating, pain, fatigue, emotional strain, or treatment costs?
  • How might treatment affect work, travel, fertility, or other priorities that matter to me?

Your own goals belong in these discussions alongside the medical findings. NCI: Questions about treatment and side effects

If a trial is being considered

  • What question is the study trying to answer, and which parts are investigational?
  • How does participation compare with my other options?
  • What extra visits, risks, expenses, and privacy considerations are involved?
  • If I stop participating, what care remains available?

Ask the research team to explain uncertain benefits as clearly as known risks. NCI: Questions and considerations before joining a clinical trial

Before leaving, confirm the next step, who will arrange it, and whom to contact with questions.
